Books Aloud was featured on KICU/Action 36, Cable 6, on Sunday, December 26.

October 2004

Throughout the month of October "San Jose inFocus" with Brian Adams included a 4-minute segment on Books Aloud. It is still accessible on their website, by going to http://www.sanjoseca.gov/civicCenterTV/infocus2004.htm.

Three Books Aloud volunteers staffed a table for us in San Jose at the Villages' "We Care" Health Faire Saturday, Oct. 23. They provided information to a lot of residents, and had a great time. We look forward to having a presence again there next year. http://www.thevillages.com/index2.htm

Our Executive Director and a long-time volunteer staffed a table at the Adult Services Resource Fair in San Jose on Thursday, Oct. 28. It was very well attended and very well received. Look for us again next year. http://www.scvmed.org/content/0,4745,sid%253D13291%2526chid%253D47698%2526ccid%253D45849,00.html

RAFT (Resource Area for Teachers), San Jose, CA

Two new very knowledgeable and very outgoing volunteers joined the Books Aloud Outreach Coordinator to staff a table at RAFT on Saturday, Oct. 30. They were perfect for the venue because they each have experience with children who have learning disabilities and so were able to discuss the effect our service has on them. The teachers were very responsive and took a lot of information back to their schools. We always enjoy going to RAFT, and hope to return in the spring.

KTEH Auction

September 12, 2004

KTEH Channel 54, San Jose

For the second time this year, we assisted KTEH Public Television Station in San Jose. Sunday, Sept. 12, a group of 34 volunteers helped in a variety of ways, including answering phones, to bring in a total of $82,000 for the KTEH Travel and Leisure Auction.

We clocked at total of 164 volunteer hours in just that one afternoon! Our volunteers are great. We appreciate the fact that they came out to spend a Sunday afternoon representing Books Aloud. It resulted in not only our giving a fellow nonprofit a hand, but in also allowing Books Aloud to get a little airtime and a mention on television.

2004 Multicultural Family Festival

August 21, 2004

Discovery Meadows, San Jose, CA

http://www.rfcommunity.org/

A lot of families came out to this event. We gave out about 100 "pre-loved" books. It was our first time to do this besides at the Open House. The books were a combination of ones left over from the Open House and donations from Santa Clara County Library's Bookmobile staff.

Providing the books gave us an opportunity to help people realize how important reading is to their family and "reading by listening" is to our clients. We hope to be able to make books available at all our events. http://www.santaclaracountylib.org/bookmobile/

We shared information about Books Aloud, passed out client and volunteer applications, and even received some donations. On top of that it was a lovely day.

Books Aloud, Inc.

1-year Anniversary Celebration/Open House

August 15, 2004

Our Anniversary/Open House was a smashing success! We provided customized bookmarks, as well as "pre-loved" books for more than 30 children. Thirty-four children -- some with the help of a parent -- read from their books in one of our recording studios and kept the cassette recording. A total of 150+ visitors came through our doors, some of whom applied as volunteers.

San Jose Public Library's mascot, Conroy the Cougar was on hand to interact with children while they waited for their turn in the studio.

Three-year-old Brennan Chavez Potter seemed to enjoy making his way through the shelves of our 5,000+ audio books, and looking at the hundreds of photos of Books Aloud volunteers.

Thanks to all the volunteers and staff who helped to make it happen, and to the public for supporting us. We look forward to doing this again!

Press Conference

June 30, 2004

Books Aloud volunteers were amongst those who attended the press conference June 30 at the Martin Luther King Jr. Public Library in downtown San Jose. The unique union of a city library and a state university library has been noticed and was recognized with presentation of the prestigious Thomson Gale/Library Journal 2004 Library of the Year Award, and a check for $10,000. In addition, each library also received a crystal obelisk - considered to be the Oscar of the library world.

See their website at http://www.sjpl.lib.ca.us/about/news/story_04-06-30.htm.

Of course, our volunteers help us to help make the library what it is.

KTEH Pledge Drive

June 13, 2004

KTEH Channel 54, San Jose

If you watched for us, you didn't see us because KTEH was not able to have the technical people there to show us as we answered calls. BUT we were there!

Books Aloud volunteers came out in full force Sunday, June 13, as one of two groups to answer phones for KTEH Public Television station in San Jose. The station's goal during our 5½ hr. shift was $12,500. Unfortunately, we fell a little short of the goal, but Books Aloud's 22 volunteers took calls amounting to a total of $7,360.

School Carnival

May 22, 2004

Julia Baldwin School, San Jose, California

Julia Baldwin School's Carnival was a hoot. There was a dunking tank, a makeshift jail, a Velcro wall, and cakewalk. There was also a book fair - where at least one Books Aloud representative found some really good deals.

The principal, as well as a number of teachers and parents showed interest in our service. We also got some really good leads for potential clients, from other exhibitors.

RAFT (Resource Area for Teachers) -- Saturday Sort

May 15, 2004

San Jose, California

http://www.raft.net

Although it was not quite as busy as we had expected, this was one of our best-received events. We gave out 43 client application packets for classrooms, relatives, and friends.

There are also copies of our printed catalogs and supplements for every age group, as well as a literature stand with our brochures. RAFT is an amazing place, where creative ideas abound. We were invited to come back, and will definitely do so. We hope to set up at RAFT about 4 times a year, and shop there when we can.

Resource Fair

May 14, 2004

Chandler Tripp School, San Jose, California

Although we had a lot of competition - ponies, puppets, and other fun stuff - we were able to share our information with a lot of parents, teachers, and other agency representatives. There was a lot of positive energy and everyone seemed to have a great time.

We look forward to working with the good people at Chandler Tripp School in the future.

11th Annual Human Race

(10K/5K Run, 5K Walk)

May 8, 2004

Shoreline Park, Mt. View, California

The Human Race was a great experience for us. Although we got involved very late and had just a few runners/walkers, more than $600 in pledges came in. We were also able to share our information with AT LEAST 100 people. We also sent client applications and information back to numerous organizations for their clientele. Next year look for us in full force!

Harvest of Knowledge 10th Annual Provider Fair

May 7, 2004

Second Harvest Food Bank, San Jose, California

Harvest of Knowledge 10th Annual Provider Fair at Second Harvest Food Bank proved to be a great networking opportunity. We made a lot of good connections, resulting in collaboration to set up mini-libraries for clients at two agencies.

Earth Day Celebration

April 21, 2004

San Jose University Campus, San Jose, California

Staff and volunteers set up in what we feared would be a light rain. However, luckily the sun soon came out - and so did the students. Some not only took volunteer applications to help in the office or to read, but to take part in the Human Race, as well.

As we are located slightly on campus, many of the students also took information to share with professors and other students. A few also took client applications for relatives who live out of town, since we serve clients all over the country. They liked the fact that they could help provide a free, convenient service for a loved one.

Foothill College Student Volunteer Fair

April 21, 2004

Foothill College, Los Altos Hills, California

Two Books Aloud, Inc. volunteer readers were kind enough to represent us at this event.  They found the students to be very interested in our program, and oddly enough, it appeared that more wanted to pass information on to prospective clients than were able to volunteer - due to the commute.
